Leather to benefit from export push in Tanzania

08/12/2011
The government in Tanzania has said five-year-old schemes to set up special economic zones around the country for manufacturing products for export markets have worked well and it has pledged to introduce more of the so-called Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in the coming years.

Dr Adelheim Meru, director general of Tanzania's EPZ Authority, has told local media that 43 manufacturing companies are already involved in the programme, which offers a series of incentives to employers. He also said the production of leather and the manufacture of finished leathergoods were among the industrial activities to have become involved.

Further EPZ access for leather and leathergoods producers are a priority, he said.
