Paraguay: OIE makes new call on foot and mouth disease

08/12/2011
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has informed Paraguay's national animal health service, Senacsa, that the entire country has lost its status of being free of foot and mouth disease in areas with a cattle vaccination programme.

An outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) was confirmed in San Pedro in September. This led to most of Paraguay losing its FMD-free status, however, a band 15 kilometres wide running in parallel with the Brazilian border was declared free from FMD with animal vaccination. The OIE said this zone would undergo high levels of vigilance to make sure vaccinations were up to date.

Paraguayan media have reported that the organisation is not satisfied with the levels of testing that have gone on in this zone and, as a result, has withdrawn the FMD-free status from it.
