Leather upholsterer opens factory in Cambodia
Italian leather upholstery producer DeCoro, which ceased production in 2009 and vacated its factories in China, has resumed operations in a new factory in Cambodia that eventually will employ about 1,000 people.
Known as DeCoro Cambodia Ltd., the new venture is headed by CEO Luca Ricci. “DeCoro is back, and as a real Italian company, we will use our knowledge and experience to produce the finest quality, superior designed products at the best possible price,” Mr Ricci said.
He said the company is partnering with the Amici dei Bambini Assn., a non-profit organisation that helps find adoptive families for children in orphanages. He said the company will donate 75 cents to the group’s efforts in Cambodia for each item it produces.
DeCoro was founded in 1997 and claims it was the first company to produce upholstery on a large scale in China.
Sales peaked at an estimated $300 million in 2006, but the company shut down without warning in January 2009 and later filed for bankruptcy protection. Court filings at the time indicated sales had fallen to $105 million by 2008 after several of its major US retail customers went out of business.
