Peru: Trujillo tanneries need to do more on wastewater treatment

23/11/2011
Many of the 60 tanneries that operate in the Peruvian city of Trujillo will have to close next year if their treatment of wastewater does not improve.

According to the National Industry Society, a Lima-based organisation that aims to promote sustainable industrial development across Peru, has claimed that none of the 60 tanneries working in Trujillo at the moment meets the required standard of wastewater treatment.

Miguel Vallejos Chávarry, one of the organisation’s directors, has told local tanners that they must work closely with local authorities to address the issue or face closure. He warned that, from 2013, tanneries that fail to meet legal requirements on environmental care will not be able to continue operating.
