Automotive industry attracts Mexican tanners
17/11/2011
Celio Miranda of tanning company Kodiak has entered into a partnership with Okuyo, a Japanese provider of automotive leather. Kodiak processes 1,000 hides a day to crust stage and Okuyo applies the finishes required by its clients, Nissan, Toyota y Honda, at a plant it runs in the neighbouring state of San Luis Potosí. The leather goes into covers for steering-wheels and gear-sticks as well as seat upholstery.
At the Panamericana tannery in Bajío district of León, something similar has taken place, although this time the broadening of the company's horizons from material for footwear and leathergoods into automotive has taken it into partnership with Garden State, a US-owned tannery in León, to supply automotive clients such as GM, Toyota and Honda.
Panamericana's Peter Poles has told local media that he wants the company to build up its business in automotive leather to around 15% of production.
