Taiwanese delegates to visit Ethiopia
A Taiwanese business
delegation made up of 40 representatives from 29 firms will begin a visit to
Ethiopia on the 24 November, 2011. Taiwan is interested in exporting fabrics,
machines and auto parts to Ethiopia and importing Ethiopian leather, hides and
skins and coffee.
Low wages, Port Djibouti
and national security are amongst the factors that attract the Taiwanese
business community to Ethiopia, according to Richard Wu, director of the Taiwan
Trade Centre. The experience that Taiwanese businesses have acquired in other
African countries is expected to be an advantage for them in Ethiopia, he said.
Taiwan may consider
opening an additional trade centre in Ethiopia should the trade volume between
the two countries increase, Mr Wu said.
So far in 2011, Taiwan has
exported goods worth $2.7 million to Ethiopia. An additional $18.3 million worth
of goods were exported from Taiwan to Djibouti, with Ethiopia as the ultimate
destination of most of the imports.
Taiwan has so far
imported $3.5 million in goods from Ethiopia.
