Pakistan: Eid slaughter numbers down
The Pakistan leather industry received fewer animal skins and hides during Eid al-Adha this year. The festival is a major chance for the leather industry to receive raw material and the low numbers this year will affect the industry negatively, according to industry experts.
The industry received between 5 and 5.5 million sheep, goat skins and cow hides on this occasion, in comparison with last year’s figure of 7 million pieces.
S.M. Naseem, chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) said “this year slaughtering of sacrificial animals decreased drastically as compared to the previous year owing to high prices of sacrificial animals.”
He further elaborated, saying that this year major decline was found in the collection of sheep and goat skins, which decreased in number by 50% as the prices of goats were much higher owing to high inflation.
He also added that the leather industry is already facing great turmoil in the shape of heavy load shedding, high prices of gas, petrol and the export of live animals.
