China reveals tannery numbers

In response to a question posed at the World Leather Congress in Rio de Janeiro on November 9, the president of the China Leather Industry Association, Su Chaoying, said that the number of tanneries operating in China at the moment was 1,800. However, he anticipated that in three years’ time, the figure will be closer to 1,500.

“A new standard for wastewater discharge will come into effect in China at the end of this year,” Mr Su said, “with stricter requirements”. What this means is that smaller tanneries are going to find it difficult to make the investment required to meet these new standards and some are not going to be able to continue operating.
