Saudi Arabia sources festival livestock from Africa

04/11/2011
To meet the requirements of the Eid-al-Adha festival, Saudi Arabia is reported to have brought large numbers of animals into the country from Africa.

For example, in the week leading up to the festival, the 2011 dates for which are November 6-9, more than three million head of sheep arrived in Saudi Arabia from Sudan and Somalia.

The head of the committee of livestock traders at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sulaiman Saeed Al-Jabri, told local media that the move would help stabilise the price of animals.

During the festival, many Muslim families buy a sheep or goat for slaughter, giving some of the meat away. Demand for animals can lead to steep increases in prices.
