Human error to blame for FMD outbreak in Paraguay

An investigation into the causes of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Paraguay in September has concluded that human error was to blame.

Errors during a vaccination programme meant some cattle in San Pedro had no protection against FMD and contracted the disease.

President of the national animal health service, Senacsa, Daniel Rojas, said he was relieved that the investigation proved there was nothing wrong with the FMD vaccine that Paraguayan farmers had been using. "It's good news that the vaccine works and that this outbreak is not down to some mutation in the virus," he told local media.
