Fire at French tannery

01/11/2011
The tannery run by Fortier-Beaulieu in central France has been partially destroyed by a fire in October.

Situated in Roanne, 90 kilometres north-west of Lyon, Fortier-Beaulieu specialises in vegetable- and chrome-tanned bovine leather for high-end leathergoods. The tannery employs around 70 people.

Around 30 firefighters attended the blaze, which broke out on a Sunday morning when production had stopped. The company later said around 1,500 square-metres of finished leather that it had in stock had been destroyed.

Stocks of chemicals were unaffected as they were stored safely in another part of the facility. The authorities said the fire presented no risk of pollution.
