An outbreak of the disease was confirmed in cattle in San Pedro department in September, but the president said the authorities had taken swift action and had been able to prevent the disease from spreading, so much so that it will be able to recover its FMD-free status sooner than initial reports suggested.
“We believe that six months will be enough for us to regain our FMD-free status,” he said at a meeting with the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, at the end of October, “even though it has taken some countries as much as two years to recover from an FMD outbreak. We are confident that within six months consumers in Chile will once again be able to enjoy delicious beef from Paraguay.”
The outbreak was confirmed on September 18. Between then and September 25, the authorities in Paraguay slaughtered 820 head of cattle.
