Greenpeace sparks new Amazon leather controversy
19/10/2011
Greenpeace has alleged that between January and May 2011 JBS sourced livestock from 19 farms “involved in deforestation or illegal activities”. These claims come more than two years after the publication of an initial report in which Greenpeace linked a number of packers, tanners and consumer product brands to deforestation in Amazon regions of Brazil. This led to the tanning industry there agreeing to introduce a certification process for its hides and finished leather.
On issuing the new allegations, Greenpeace campaigner Sarah Shoraka said: “Two years after the agreement, JBS is not meeting the demands of customers or its own commitments.”
