New South Africa support plan will include leather

In a late amendment to the original plan, a support programme that the South African government is setting up to help suppliers to the automotive industry, the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP), is to include leather.

Trade and industry minister Rob Davies said the products including leather interiors were vulnerable because an earlier programme provided them with a higher level of support. Dr Davies announced the inclusion of leather in the APDP at the official opening of the Johannesburg International Motor Show in mid-October.

Overall, automotive component exports from South Africa increased by 10.6% in 2010 to reach $3.9 billion, with leather seat parts accounting for 9.4% of this total.

The minister said the APDP would be complete within weeks and would come into effect in 2013.
