Government considers raw hide ban in Tanzania

The government in Tanzania has said it will consider a ban on exports of raw hides and skin to help local tanners secure access to the country’s raw material.

In July, the Tanzania Tanners Association called on the government to increase export taxes on hides and skins from 40% to 90% to discourage traders from letting the material leave the country. The association made it clear at the time that it would prefer a complete ban on these exports.

Commentators in Tanzania have said around 90% of hides and skins are being exported at the moment. Current estimates are that the country is producing 2.8 million cattle hides a year, 3.8 million goat skins and 1 million sheepskins.

Six tanneries are active in the country at the moment: Moshi Leather Industries, Tanzania Leather Industries, Afro Leather, Kibaha Tannery, Himo Tanners and Salex Tanners. However, they are operating at below 50% capacity, according to local media.
