Pakistan: debate continues on live animal export ban

14/10/2011

Livestock farmers and breeders in Pakistan have opposed ban or restrictions on the export of live animals as demanded by tanneries, the leather industry and meat merchants.

One director of the Livestock and Breeders Association, Naeemullah Malik, told local media that it was extremely important to value the views of the livestock farming sector which consists mainly of small farmers. This sector contributes about 11% to the GDP, Mr Malik claimed.

Another director of the association, Mian Rahat Khan, said that the ban would deprive the livestock farmers from getting a fair price for their products and result in increasing inefficiencies in the value added sector.

The association urged the government to review the matter in the light of the concerns of the livestock farmers and the long-term economic interests of the country.
