Australia reports its first monthly rise in beef exports since March

13/10/2011
During the month of September 2011, Australian beef exporters shipped 8% more volume than in the same month last year, achieving a total of just short of 82,000 tonnes. This represents the first monthly increase (in comparison with the monthly totals for 2010) since March.

Conditions for Australian beef exports have been difficult in recent months owing to the high value of the country’s currency, increased competition from the US in the Japanese market and the downturn in the global economy. For the first nine months of 2011, Australia exported a total of 693,570 tonnes of beef, 1% up on the figure for the same period last year.

Drier weather and increased slaughter in Queensland made for greater availability of beef in September. One of the biggest growth areas was the Middle East owing to lower volume of mutton and less competition from Brazilian beef in local markets. Exports in the first nine months to Saudi Arabia increased by 204% compared to the same period in 2010.
