Argentina loses 100 abattoirs in a year
12/10/2011
Industry observers have said that a fall in cattle slaughter numbers in Argentina is the main reason for the closure of 100 abattoirs across the country in a year, and that the situation is already having a knock-on effect on the value of hides and leather, exacerbated by a fall in demand for Argentinean raw material and finished leather in export markets.
Reports suggest that in the first seven months of 2011 Argentina slaughtered 6.16 million head of cattle, 13% fewer than in the same period in 2010. Compared to 2009, the 2011 figures represent a drop of 33.5%, or 3.1 million head fewer.
Industry statistics suggest that in the first half of 2011, Argentina registered the lowest slaughter numbers in 22 years.
