Hide growth for Paraguay before FMD outbreak

12/10/2011
Paraguay registered an increase of 22% in the value of its exports of cattle hides in the first nine months of 2011. The figure is in keeping with predictions of impressive growth for Paraguay as a source of raw material for the leather industry, but the country was hit by an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in September, which will affect growth figures for the full year, as well as for 2012.

During the January-September period, Paraguay registered a total of $827 million in export revenues for meat and hides. Calculating both products together, the government said 200,000 tonnes of beef and cattle hides had been shipped to other countries.
