6% growth for Indian leather exports in first five months

The leather sector in India has reported growth in the value of its exports in the first five months of the current financial year, April to August 2011.

Export revenues reached almost $1.5 billion from just short of $1.4 billion over the same period in the previous financial year, an increase of just over 6%. 

Exports of leather footwear were up by 6.9% to $579.1 million, while leather garments brought in 9.3% more in export revenues than in the April-August period in 2010, reaching almost $162.2 million. The value of leathergoods exports was 15.8% higher at $348.5 million.

However, on negative note, exports of finished leather fell by 1.8% to $293.6 million.
