FMD: Paraguay asks for help

07/10/2011
Paraguay has asked for help from neighbouring countries in dealing with the outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) that came to light there in September.

The Mercosur common market (Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay and soon Venezuela) has its own permanent committee for veterinary matters, which also includes experts from Chile and Bolivia. Members of this group are the most likely to respond to Paraguay's request for help.

Brazil's director of animal health, Guilherme Marques, has said the most pressing priority for Paraguay will be to find the source of the FMD outbreak.
