Traceability project in Uruguay reaches completion

07/10/2011
A project to have traceability of the entire national cattle population in Uruguay is complete. The ministry of livestock, agriculture and fishing made the announcement on October 6.

Originally, the government said it planned to have the system in place by the end of July this year. The ministry experienced a delay in encouraging livestock farmers to make their data clear enough to match with the data abattoirs capture on animals going to slaughter. With the project now complete, Uruguay is claiming to be the first country in the world to offer traceability of its entire cattle herd.

The project took five years and has involved registering a total of 11.75 million live cattle.
