Moroccan tanners branch out

06/10/2011
The Moroccan leather industry gathered for the fourth MaroCuir event in Casablanca from September 28-October 1. In all, 140 companies from Morocco and overseas took part.

Sheep, lamb, calf and goatskin are still the most common materials, but one of the developments to emerge from the event is that Moroccan tanners are beginning to develop ostrich leather. There are now two ostrich farms in the country and the meat is gaining in popularity in local supermarkets and restaurants.

Also, some Moroccan tanners are buying and processing camel skins from specialist abattoirs in Mauritania, where camel meat is popular.
