Rio Grande do Sul closes four border abattoirs

05/10/2011
The authorities in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul are reported to have closed down four abattoirs as part of a wider programme to tighten up health standards on the transportation of meat and cattle in areas close to the border with Argentina.

These measures are aimed at preventing the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Paraguay from spreading to Brazil.

Rio Grande do Sul has no border with Paraguay, but the authorities said they wanted to carry out a health check on meat and cattle facilities in the border area in the north-west of the state because Paraguay is less than 150 kilometres from the border between Rio Grande do Sul and the Argentinean province of Misiones.

According to the authorities, the four abattoirs against which they have taken action were operating illegally.
