Luxury automotive group BMW has made important changes to its senior management team in the US.

Taking over on October 1, Ludwig Willisch has taken over from Jim O’Donnell as chief executive of BMW North America, moving from the position of head of the company’s European sales region. Mr O’Donnell is retiring.

The BMW Group achieved a substantial increase in sales in the US market in the first half of this year. A total of 143,974 vehicles were sold in the US between January and June, 18.1% more than for the same period in 2010, making the region the BMW Group’s second-largest market in the first half of 2011 after Europe. Last year, the company delivered a total of 266,580 cars to US customers, an increase of 10.1% on the 2009 total.

At the same time, Dirk Arnold has become the new vice-president for corporate communications for BMW North America. He will be responsible for leading the corporate communications department and team in the US, Canada and Mexico.

He succeeds Tom Kowaleski, who will assume new responsibilities as consultant to the BMW Group corporate communications team.
