New award nomination for Scottish Leather Group

28/09/2011
The Scottish Leather (SLG) has been nominated for an award in a programme organised by a local chamber of commerce.

SLG’s nomination has come in the category for Outstanding Performing Business with more than 25 employees in the 2011 Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

SLG is made up of Bridge of Weir Leather Company Limited, Andrew Muirhead & Son Limited, NCT Leather Limited, W J & W Lang Limited and SLG Technology Limited. Together, they constitute the largest manufacturer of bovine leather in the UK, with a specialism in supplying leather to the interior and transportation seating industries worldwide. The group employs more than 500 people and has a turnover of £97 million. It exports leather to more than 60 countries.

The group designed and built a £6million thermal energy plant at its site in Bridge of Weir, launching it July last year. SLG said this privately funded investment was essential for it to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. As a result, it now claims to manufacture the leather with the lowest carbon-footprint in the world and markets it as low carbon leather. The Bridge of Weir Leather Company won Tannery of the Year for Europe in 2010.

On hearing of this latest award nomination, group managing director, Iain McFadyen, commented: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted. Since 2003, the Group has been working on meeting the demands of our zero waste strategy, which led to the design of our thermal energy plant, a world first for the leather industry.

“As a Scottish employer, we are committed to the development of our employees and products and in 2011, developed a new qualification in leather production, verified by Reid Kerr College, teaching four modules in manufacturing processing, quality and product, health and safety aspect and finally chemical processing. Our investment in technical innovation coupled with investment in our employees ensures that we have a sustainable future manufacturing in Scotland.”

The awards will be presented at an event on November 11.
