USDA predicts continuing drop in Uruguayan slaughter stats
27/09/2011
One headline finding is that slaughter rates will continue to fall, with 545,000 tonnes beef the total projected output for 2011 and 535,000 tonnes for 2012. The report says that severe drought in Uruguay in 2008 and 2009 is one of the main reason for ongoing low slaughter numbers.
USDA expects total kill for 2011 of 2.15 million head of cattle and for this to fall slightly in 2012 to 2.1 million. The drought has led to the national herd size being smaller, it has explained.
Per capita consumption of beef remains high, estimated at 60 kilos per person per year by USDA, much higher than Argentina’s 52.3 kilos per person.
