Exports from the Brazilian state of Goiás reached their highest level so far this year in August, $602.5 million for the month. This represents an increase of 67% on August 2010.

State secretary for industry and commerce, Alexandre Baldy, said on announcing the figure that this was the second-highest export total for a single month that Goiás has ever achieved. The record, $643 million, ocurred in June 2008.

He said China had become an important buyer of goods from Goiás, with leather among the main products shipped to clients there from companies in the Brazilian state. The Tannery of the Year for the Americas for 2011, Coming Indústria e Comércio de Couros, is from the state.

Other important export products are soya, beef, canola, copper sulfide and sugar. State governor, Marconi Perillo, has said he will make an official visit to China in the coming months to encourage growth in trade.
