China: Zhejiang authorities push small tanners out

Feedback from China following the All China Leather Exhibition, which ended in Shanghai on September 9, suggests that the predicted move of Chinese tanneries away from coastal areas is already in full swing.

Newly elected China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) president, Su Chaoying, said this was likely to happen during a press conference at the Shanghai event.

In feedback gathered by CLIA at the exhibition, leather producers have said that environmental pressures have already driven them out of Zhejiang Province, immediately to the south of Shanghai. There are reports that the authorities in Zhejiang will let no tannery processing fewer than 300,000 hides a year continue there.
