Chiara Mastrotto steps down from Confindustria post

12/09/2011
The chief executive of prominent Arzignano tanning company Mastrotto Group, Chiara Mastrotto, has resigned from her position as vice-president of the tanning branch of Italian employers’ federation Confindustria in the province of Vicenza because of ongoing investigations of financial impropriety at her company.

Special agents placed the Mastrotto Group under investigation at the end of August, saying that they had uncovered evidence of under-the-table payments to more than 170 employees, part of an alleged strategy of tax evasion.

Ms Mastrotto, daughter of Bruno and niece of Santo Mastrotto, the two founders of the group, was elected to her Confindustria position for two years at the start of 2010. Media in Vicenza have reported that senior figures in Confindustria have denied forcing her to resign and have publicly thanked her for the gesture.
