Lanxess unveils new tanning process

German specialty chemicals manufacturer Lanxess has gone ahead with its plan to launch a new tanning technology at the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai, which began on September 6. X-Tan, a new organic tanning process offers substantial advantages for wet white production in terms of quality and environmental aspects, Lanxess claimed at the event.

One of the key features of the new X-Tan technology is the virtual whiteness of the leather, giving it good dyeability. At the same time, the resulting leathers have high stability at climate change tests and good tear resistance. It is based on the active ingredient polycarbamoyl sulfonate (PCMS). During tannage PCMS permanently and irreversibly cross-links with the lysine groups of the collagen. This ensures good tanning results and a stable and transportable wet white.

During tanning only toxicologically uncritical substances are used or generated. The leather, shavings and effluent contain no reactive tanning materials. Furthermore, no pickling is required. This results in a reduction of the salt load in the effluent.

The new X-Tan technology is in line with the aims of Lanxess’s Sustainable Leather Management initiative.
