Tannery of the Year: judges confirmed

05/09/2011
Four independent judges representing best practice in a variety of business sectors, inside and outside the leather industry, have kindly agreed to officiate at the second Tannery of the Year Awards in Shanghai on September 6.

Kim Reid, head of leadership and talent at British Airways, Steven Jesseph, chief executive of Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production and Paul Pearson, secretary of the International Council of Tanners, all acted as judges in the inaugural Tannery of the Year competition in March 2010. They are joined this time by Dr Volkan Candar, who represents the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies.

As well as being able to offer independence and objectivity, the panel has in-depth expertise in global excellence in labour management, corporate social responsibility and environmental best practice. There are leather industry experts to assess the technical aspects of each of the ten finalist tanneries (two each for Africa, Asia excluding China, the Americas, China itself and Europe), but also an external perspective. One of the aims of Tannery of the Year is to help the leather industry present itself in a more positive light to the outside world.
