Arzignano makes green pledge

23/08/2011
An industry association in the area around Arzignano in northern Italy has said it will turn the Chiampo valley, home to 860 different leather-sector businesses employing 10,000 employees and turning over EUR 3 billion a year, into “green valley”.

The area’s chamber of commerce announced the initiative towards the end of the summer holiday period. It said export earnings had reduced by around 30% since the global economic downturn of 2008 and that the Arzignano leather industry was in need of a relaunch under a green banner. It said leather industry associations, including UNIC, Italy’s National Union for the Tanning Industry, had backed the idea.
