Ministry says Tanzanian tannery output is below 50%

Figures from Tanzania suggest that the country increased the value of its hides and skins exports in 2010 to almost $5.2 million, an increase of 23.5% on 2009.

On announcing the figures, which come mainly from raw hide exports, the minister for trade and industry, Dr Cyril Chami, said he expected to see even greater growth in the full-year figures for 2011.

Tanzania has eight tanneries, which have a combined capacity of 73.9 million square-feet of leather a year. However, the ministry calculates that the combined output of the eight tanneries in 2010 was 34.3 million square-feet, 46.4% of capacity. The local leather industry has been campaigning to keep Tanzania’s raw material from leaving the country.
