New strategy for UK leather
17/08/2011
The UK Leather Federation, with the support of the University of Northampton, will hold an event at the House of Lords in London, the country’s second tier of parliament, to launch the strategy, which the organisation has said will define the future of the leather sector there and outline what it must do to survive in a competitive global marketplace.
According to figures published by the federation, the domestic leather production industry has an annual turnover of £200 million, but this is within an international trade in finished leather that has an estimated worth of more than £11 billion a year.
Key areas of strategic importance and concern for the UK leather industry include skill needs, education and people development (which, under the strategy, the University of Northampton will help to meet), research and development, the environment and sustainability, branding of finished leather and raw material management.
The reception at the House of Lords will take place on the evening of Tuesday, September 13, starting at 6.30. It will be hosted by Baroness Falkner of Margravine, Chancellor of The University of Northampton.
