Strong first-half growth for US beef in three markets

Senior vice-president for global marketing at the US Meat Export Federation, Dan Halstrom, has said his organisation is experiencing strong growth in demand from three markets so far in 2011.

During the first six months of the year, Mr Halstrom said US beef exports to Canada were 23% higher than over the same period in 2010 in terms of volume, reaching 87.5 million kilos, and 44% higher in value, at $463.9 million.

Exports to Central and South America were 51% higher in volume (12.8 million kilos) than last year and 71% higher in value ($35.2 million), led by strong growth in Chile, Peru, Colombia and Guatemala.

Beef exports to the Middle East also showed strong growth, with volume (80.4 million kilos) up 38% from last year and value ($153.7 million) up more than 50%.
