Bangladesh: fiscal year off to a good start for leather industry

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh has said the country’s total leather sector exports grew by 34.7% to just over $72 million in July 2011, the first month of the new financial year, from $53.5 million in the same month last year.

Bangladesh exported finished leather worth $29.3 million for the month, an increase of 22% compared to July 2010. The value of footwear exports was up by 46.4% to $38.5 million, and that of exports of leathergoods increased by a third to reach nearly $4.3 million.

The country has fixed an export target of $792.3 million for the leather sector for 2011-12 (July-June) compared to a target of $651 million for the previous financial year.
