Reports from West Africa suggest drought has decimated Kenya's livestock, with the government there valuing lost animals at nearly $700 million.

A quarter of the country’s herd of 14 million Zebu cattle in arid and semi-arid areas is said to be lost.

Livestock Development permanent secretary, Kenneth Lusaka, told local media that around 3.5 million head of cattle are reported to have died due to lack of water and pasture, in addition to 2.7 million goats and 2.5 million sheep.
