Reports of lay-offs at JBS tannery

03/08/2011
Reports from Brazil say packer and tanning group JBS has laid off more than 300 tannery workers at a facility in Mato Grosso do Sul.

A local trade union representative, Vilson Gimenes Gregório, has told media in the city of Campo Grande that the lay-offs took place towards the end of July and that JBS had offered no explanation for its action.

The tannery in question is one of a number that JBS bought from a rival group, BMZ, during its ambitious expansion plan at the end of the last decade.
