A former senior industrial development officer at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Magne Nestvold, has died at the age of 89.

A Norwegian-born chemical engineer, he specialised in leather tanning at CTC Lyon where he met his wife.

After working with K.H. Gustavson on the chemistry of leather tanning he worked as a research chemist and later as technical manager for M&D Omdahl A/S tannery in Drammen, Norway. During the 1960s, he had several stints in various capacities in South America.

Most of his active professional life was spent in Vienna at UNIDO.

Mr Nestvold was among founding fathers of the UNIDO Leather and Leather Products Industry Panel, a global forum composed of representatives from nearly the entire range of the leather-based industry: private and public sector, manufacturers and traders, education and training, research and development institutes; covering raw hides and skins, tanning, chemical suppliers, footwear and other leather products; support industries and trades; national, regional and professional organisations.

UNIDO said on announcing his death that Mr Nestvold had been “one of the most widely respected patriarchs of the leather world, well-known for his quiet, concise, low-key manner and photographic memory”. The organisation added that Magne Nestvold leaves behind an amazing legacy for which he will be always fondly remembered.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.
