20/07/2011
French customs authorities have announced that leathergoods exports rose by 19.1% last year, bringing in revenues of EUR 1.2 billion.

France believes that this figure gives it an 11% contribution of the global leathergoods market, which would give the global market a value of EUR 10.9 billion. China and Hong Kong can, together, lay claim to 55% of this and Italy only 10%, less than France.

Handbags constituted 58% of France’s leathergoods exports last year, while small leathergoods such as purses and cardholders accounted for 26% and suitcases 14%.

China overtook Japan as the main destination of leathergoods exports from Fance, with a 23% share. Ten brands account for 83% of the overall export revenues and LVMH is at the top of the list, with a 49% share on its own.
