Government bid to reduce clandestine slaughter in Brazil

The government in Brazil has said it will launch a programme to reduce the amount of beef on the market there that comes from unregistered abattoirs.

Estimates from the ministry of agriculture suggest that as much as 50% of the beef sold locally in Brazil comes from abattoirs that are not registered with the authorities, pay no tax and undergo no inspection.
