Auction for assets of closed tannery

13/07/2011
An auction has taken place for the assets of the Anzolin tannery in Montorso, near Arzignano, in northern Italy, which closed last year in the face of heavy debts. Media reports in the local province, Vicenza, have said that another tannery in Montorso, Conceria Laba put in the highest bid for Anzolin’s assets, including buildings and tanning machinery.

As recently as 2009, Anzolin achieved turnover of EUR 11 million and had 50 employees. The person in charge at the time of the closure of the facility, Umberto Maria Anzolin, is the nephew of the founder, Augusto Anzolin, who started the business in 1974. Umberto Maria Anzolin is reported to have moved to Hong Kong with his family.

This has been the subject of much speculation in the Italian media because Mr Anzolin’s partner, Heather Parisi, is a famous television presenter. A recent entry on her official blog categorically denied allegations that the couple had gone into hiding in Hong Kong to avoid facing up to the tannery’s financial difficulties.
