China could lift import duties on luxury goods

Reports in China have indicated that the government will reduce import duties on luxury goods to try to discourage some shoppers from leaving the country to buy high-end goods, including shoes and leathergoods.

Prestige is another of the reasons why wealthy Chinese consumers travel to Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Paris and London to buy high-end bags and shoes, but no one denies that these items have become very expensive in Chinese retail outlets.

One report said that the change may come in time for this year’s Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in China, September 12. The same report suggested import duties could be removed entirely.
