Brazil slaughters more cows

Official slaughter statistics from Brazil for the first quarter of 2011 show that the country’s abattoirs processed almost 7.1 million head of cattle during the three-month period. This represents a slight increase (0.2%) on the total for the first quarter of 2010.

The statistics also show that the level of cow slaughter was 11.6% higher during the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same period the year before.

During the quarter, 8.8 million bovine hides came into the Brazilian leather supply chain, 3.6% more than during the first three months of 2010. The centre-west region of the country was the most important source of hides, with 37.3% of the total, followed by the south-east with 20.2%, Mato Grosso with 17.3% and São Paulo with 14.8%.
