Portuguese tanning museum remains unopened

A museum dedicated to the tanning industry in the central region of Portugal remains closed to the public, with no proposed date for its inauguration in sight.

The museum, in the town of Alcanena, was due to open to the public in 2008, and a new building to house it was completed then. However, it has lain empty ever since.

Local mayor, Fernanda Asseiceira, told media in the region that negotiations were under way to secure five or six pieces of tanning machinery to put inside, but said she did not know when the museum would be ready to receive visitors. “It’s not enough just to open the doors,” she said. “This is a space that needs to offer dignity to the industry and to the idea behind setting up a tanning museum.”
