Based at Avoudrey near the Swiss border, SIS is aiming to raise EUR 5.6 million to open a new workshop to increase its production capacity. The package the minister has offered will contribute EUR 2 million of this.
SIS started business in 1998 with the merger of three separate companies, Supercuir, IWD and Softline Box. Its specialist product is high-end watch straps from material such as alligator skin, which it supplies to luxury watch brands across the border in Switzerland.
In 2001, SIS expanded its production to make a wider range of leathergoods and in 2004, it opened sales and quality control offices in Hong Kong and Switzerland respectively. The company employs more than 300 people at the moment but has said it hopes the new workshop will allow it to create 285 new jobs.
The French government calculates that around 600 companies are involved in the country’s leathergoods industry, employing a combined total of 17,000 people and turning over around EUR 1.5 billion a year.
