Australian leather prices down 15%
Demand for leathergoods in Australia is yet to recover to pre-global financial crisis levels, figures from Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) have shown.
Domestic green hide prices in the country posted a three-year high of $35 (for hides sold in Victoria) in mid-April, according to MLA.
But prices have since decreased 15% and, although rates remain 8-29% above where they were at the same time last year, demand has reduced.
“The peak levels this year remain around 35% below the top prices achieved during 2006 an indication of just how much global consumer demand for leather products has retreated,” MLA said.
Wet blue hide prices have followed a slightly lagged trend to green hides over the past few years.
Prices are likely to slip further heading into winter, a traditionally quieter leather demand period in the northern hemisphere owing to the approaching European holidays
