First prize in an international photography competition has gone to Mohammed Rakibul Hasan for an image he entitled The Tannery Industry. The shot shoes hundreds of hides turning gold in the sun at a tannery near the photographer’s home town, Dhaka in Bangladesh.

The competition, the Microfinance Photography Contest, is run by CGAP, an independent policy and research centre dedicated to advancing financial access for the world’s poor. The most recent edition attracted nearly 2,000 entries from professional and amateur photographers from all parts of the world. The judges were looking for images that showed the entrepreneurial spirit and energy of human enterprise the world over.

This is the third time Mr Hasan has been a finalist in the contest, but the first time he has won the top prize. He works as a freelance photographer while he studies for a postgraduate diploma in photo-journalism in the Philippines.

Three judges chose his hides photograph as the winning entry: Suzanne Lemakis, a vice-president and director of the Department of Fine Art for Citi Group; Norris Brock, a multiple Emmy winner and a director of photography on over 18 National Geographic TV specials, shot in many locations around the world; and Joshua Roberts, a photo-journalist who spent 10 years as photography editor for Agence France Presse in Washington and London.
