Tanners and packers join forces in Argentina

Tanneries and hide traders in Argentina have joined forces with packer firms to set up a new associaiton.

Around a dozen companies in all set up the Federation of Meat and Related Sector Co-operatives. Their aim is to set up a platform to discuss how a series of obstacles the meat industry faces at the moment is affecting their various sectors. The new federation said it hoped to be able to find a way of helping retailers supply meat at “more accessible prices”.

A consultant who advised the founding companies of the new organisation, Miguel Cichowolski, said at a press conference to mark the launch: “The meat industry has been going through difficulties since last year. Even if there has been a slight improvement so far this year, with the rise of [farmers choosing to cultivate] soyabean and the lack of animals going to slaughter, prices have gone up more than they should have. That’s why we have decided to get together to address the problem.”
